Badami is located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka. It was the capital of the Chalukya empire during 6th and 7th century AD. This places houses one of the architectural wonders in Karnataka. Since this was a hilly region with the terrain filled with rocks and boulders, it offered natural defence against enemies. There are four cave temples, Jambulinga temple, Bhoothanatha temple, a fort and other monuments. It is one of the important heritage sites of Karnataka.
There are four cave temples in Badami. Perhaps the oldest temple in Badami is Cave temple 1. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The structure is made of red sandstone. There are several paintings of amorous couples in this structure. One prime attraction is the idol of Shiva and Parvathi with a coiled serpent and the 18 armed Nataraja with more than 80 dance poses. Cave temple 2 and 3 is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The most decorated and architectural marvel is Cave temple 3. There are carvings of several incarnations of Vishnu. Cave temple 4 relates to the existence of Jainism during that period. Mahavira is picturised in a sitting posture.
Badami has several temples dedicated to Lord Bhutanatha. It is located on the banks of Agasthya lake. This temple complex has two main temples. The first temple is the Bhutanatha temple located on the east side of Agasthya lake with an open mantapa gradually extending into the lake. The second temple commonly called Mallikarjuna group of temples is located in the north east side of the lake.
Badami fort is located near the Bhutanatha temple. It is a steep climb along the east side of the temple with several view points. The climb to the view point gives a good view of the town below.
This temple is the oldest known Trikutachala temple in Karnataka. It is home to Agasthya Theertha and other important temples in Badami.
