Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary derives its name from Brahmagiri Peak, which is the highest point in this region. The sanctuary occoupies an area of 181 sq. km. It stretches from Kodagu district of Karnataka state on the north to Wayanad district of Kerala in the south.

Nature and Wildlife

This well forested area has flora and fauna in abundance. Bamboo is present here in abundance. The sanctuary composes of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Wildlife include Tiger, Elephants, King Cobra,Mouse Deer,Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Wild Dog, Giant Flying Squirrel, Sloth Bear, Wild Pig, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Nilgiri Langur, Slender Loris, Bonnet Macaque, Common Langur, Barking Deer,  Malabar Giant Squirrel,  Nilgiri Marten, Common Otter, Brown Mongoose, Civets, Porcupine, Pangolin, Python etc. The sanctuary is home to several species of birds. Emerald dove, black bulbul and Malabar trogon are the rare species of birds found here.

Brahmagiri Peak

Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary gets its name from this peak. The peak has an altitude of 1607 m. This peak is a trekkers paradise. There are two routes to the peak, one starting from Iruppu falls in Karnataka and the other starting from Thirunelli in Kerala. To undertake this trek, permission from Srimangala Forest Range Office and Thirunelli Forest Range Office is compulsary. Srimangala, Kutta and Gonikoppal are the nearest towns to Brahmagiri peak. The trek distance is around 7 to 8 km. The terrain is flat and not so difficult to climb making it ideal for beginner trekkers.

Pakshipathalam or Munikal

This place is located at an altitude of 1740 m. Popularly known as Pakshipathalam in Kerala, it is known by the name of Munikal in Karnataka. It is believed the saints of yesteryears visited this cave for penance.

Buses are available from Bangalore to Kutta, Srimangala and Gonikoppal. Both these places are very near to Iruppu falls which is the start of the trekking point from Karnataka to the Brahmagiri peak.

Car / Taxi

Bangalore to Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary distance is 245 km and is approximately a 5 hour drive. From Bangalore join the Bangalore Mysore road. Continue on State Highway 17 to KRS dam in Karimanti. Continue on the KRS road to Elivala. Connect to Hunsur road. Take Mysore Madikeri road to Nagarahole road in Doddanunsur. Follow the Nagarahole road to Gonikoppal Kutta road. Take the Rameshwara road until Kurchi. After 3 km take a left to Iruppu falls road. Continue on this road for 3 km to reach Iruppu falls.

Mysore to Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary distance is 114 km and is approximately a 2.5 hr drive. From Mysore , connect to Hunsur road. Take Mysore Madikeri road to Nagarahole road in Doddanunsur. Follow the Nagarahole road to Gonikoppal Kutta road. Take the Rameshwara road until Kurchi. After 3 km take a left to Iruppu falls road. Continue on this road for 3 km to reach Iruppu falls.
