Makalidurga is a small hill with height 1117 mt situated in a village of the same name. It is roughly around 60 km from Bengaluru. It is a fort hill. There is a railway track which passes through the base of the hill making it even more interesting. The trek to Makalidurga peak is relatively easy. Legend says that Sage Markandeya performed penance here. This fort was under the control of the Vijayanagar empire. Eventually the Maratha's captured it. It was later taken over by Kempe Gowda.
Makalidurga is an ideal one day trek making it short and sweet. One can start trekking from the Makalidurga railway station. A 3 km walk along the railway track takes one to the base of of the hill. One should look for the sign 54/100 to take a left turn. The trail leads to the top of the hill.
If one is taking his own vehicle, there is a parking space created to park vehicles. One needs to park and cross the track. A path to the left leads to a place where there are some houses and a small temple. This marks the beginning of the trek. A further walk down leads to an open space where the Makalidurga hill is visible. A right here will lead to the trail which gains altitude gradually and opens up great views of the horizon.
