Melkote is a temple town located in the Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district. There are two popular temples in Melkote - Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple and Yoga Narasimhaswamy temple. The whole place is located on a hill range known as Yadugiri at an altitude of 3589 ft. This place has references in Hindu mythology. It is said that the great saint Ramanuja lived in this place for 14 years.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Cheluvana Narayana Swamy. The diety is unique in a way because both Rama and Krishna and his descendants were great devotees of the lord. The temple recieved the attention of the Wodeyars of Mysore as they richly decorated the temple with their contributions of jewels and crowns.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Yoga Narasimha. Mythology says that Lord Prahlad himself was responsible for establishing the idol of the diety in this place.
The temple has a wide Kalyani, also called as Pushkarani. It is a water tank built beautifully with steps and mantaps all around. Rayagopura is another attraction in Melkote.
