Murudeshwara is coastal temple town in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. It is famous for the Murudeshwara temple which houses the second largest statue of Lord Shiva. This place has great mythological significance. It was near this place that Ravana did penance and obtained the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva to attain immortality. However, once Atmalinga was placed on the ground, it would cease to protect Ravana from immortality. Lord Ganesha in the guise of a Brahmin kid tricked Ravana by placing the Linga on the earth. In anger, the cloth covering the linga was thrown to a placed called Mrideshwar, currently known as Murudeshwar.
The temple is built on a hill and is surrounded on three sides by the Arabian sea. The entrance to the temple is grand with a 20 store Gopura where two life size elephants stand grand. This gopura is one among the tallest. The temple is dedicated to Lord Mridesha Linga also called Murudeshwara. The idol is believed to be a piece from the original Atmalinga of Lord Shiva.
The statue with a height of 123 ft i.e approximately 37 m is the second highest statue of Lord Shiva in the whole world. The idol is magnificient with it's scale and it scintillates over the horizon to be visible from a long distance.
