Mysore is one of the most popular and must see places in India. It draws loads and loads of tourists throughout the year due to it's rich heritage. The palaces in Mysore are an architectural wonder. The Brindavan gardens located in KRS dam houses a beautiful botanical garden which includes a musical fountain. Chamundi hills attracts hoards of Hindu devotees. St. Philomena's church is popular among Christians. Mysore zoo is another tourist attraction.

Mysore palace or Ambavilas Palace

Mysore Palace or Ambavilas Palace is located in the heart of the Mysore city and is a magnificent palace of all the palaces in Mysore. Mysore, which is also called as the City of Palaces, was once ruled by the Wodeyars family, from this palace. The history of this palace dates back to 14th century, when it was first built and has been architecturally renewed and rebuilt multiple times since then. The palace which we see now was built in 1912.

The palace is completely lit during Sundays, National holidays and State festivals from 7 pm to 8 pm. It's a treat for the eyes to watch a magnificent palace completely lit against the dark sky in the night. Approximately 1 lakh bulbs are used for this purpose! No words can do justice to the splendid view. It's a heaven on earth when its lit. There are around 12 temples in the palace, oldest of which dates back to 12th century.

Dasara festival

The whole city of Mysore wears a celebratory look during Dasara. All the raods are lit up to add to the excitement of the festival. The palace is the venue for the world famous Dasara festival, which is held for 10 days every year in September/October. The festival celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga, after she slew the demon Mahishasura, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

Lalitha Mahal

This palace was built in the year 1921 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV for the Viceroy of India. It is a magnificient structure, white in colour with Italian influence in architecture.

Jaganmohan Palace

In the year 1861, the older Mysore palace was destroyed in a fire. Since most of the palace was built in wood, very little remained of it. It was during this time that the then ruler Krishnaraja Wodeyar III built this palace as an alternate place for the royal family. Jayachamarajendra Art gallery was setup at this place in 1915.

Krishna Raja Sagara

This place is more popularly called the KRS. It was built by Sir M. Vishvesvaraya in 1924. The dam is built across the river Kaveri which is a lifeline river for farmers in the Mysore Mandya belt. It is the main source of water for Mysore city and accounts for drinking water supply to Bengaluru.

Brindavan Gardens

Attached to KRS is a botanical garden called Brindavan gardens. It is a very popular picnic spot. There is also a musical fountain which is another attraction.

Chamundi hills

Chamundi hill houses the popular Chamundi temple. It has an elevation of 1000 mt. Small trek leading to Chamundi temple is quite popular. Panoramic view of Mysore can be seen from the top of this hill.

St Philomena's Church

This church was built in the year 1956 using the Neo Gothic style of Architecture. It was built in honour of St. Philomena.

Mysore Zoo

Mysore zoo is one of the first zoos in India established in the year 1892. It is very popular and is located on the outskirts of Mysore city. The zoo is home to a wide variety of wild animals.

Things to do in Mysore

  • Visit Mysore atleast once during Dasara time to enjoy the grand splendor the city has to offer. The whole city wears a festive look. Visit the palace and see the world famous Jamboo Savari.
  • Visit and explore the Mysore palace. If time permits, visit  Jaganmohan palace, Lalitha Mahal palaces.
  • Visit the KRS dam. Enjoy the walk upto the Brindavan gardens or take a boat ride.
  • Enjoy the greenery and the park setup in Brindavan Gardens. Indulge in the musical fountain programme during the evenings.
  • Trek the Chamundi hill. Take the journey enroute preferably during sunset and enjoy the panoramic view of Mysore. This is especially a treat during Dasara or public holidays when the palace is lit up. It is a treat to watch the lightings from a distance. Take blessings from Lord Chamundeshwari at Chamundi temple.
