Details

Pattadakal is a World Heritage site declared by UNESCO in 1987. It was the place where the "Pattabhisheka" or coronation of Badami Chalukya kings took place. The place is renowned for it's architectural marvel. There are ten temples at Pattadakal four of which are built in Dravidian style of architecture, four are built in Nagaru style and one temple has both influences. There is also a Jain temple. The Chalukyan architecture started in Aihole and evolved into a unique style at Pattadakal making it one of the most important monuments in India.

Virupaksha temple

Virupaksha temple was built in 8th century to celebrate the victory of Chalukyas over the Pallavas of Kanchi. There are several sculptures of Hindu gods in the temple including Shivalinga, Nataraja and Ugranarasimha. It is the biggest and the grandest temples in Pattadakal. The temple is built on a grand scale with three entrances from the north, east and south. There is a sacred sanctum and a pillared Navagraha. The diety of the temple is mounted on a square pedastal in the form of a black Shivalinga.

Sangameshwara temple

Sangameshwara temple is the oldest temple in Pattadakal built in Dravidian style. There are sculptures on Ugranarasimha and Nataraja on the outer walls of the temple. The similarity between Virupaksha and Sangameshwara temples is that the monuments are square from Base to Shikara. There are around 20 pillars and there are some Kannada inscriptions on the walls of the temple.

There are ten temples in Pattadakal including a Jain basadi. Chandrashekara temple, Mallikarjuna temple, Kashivishwanatha temple, Galganatha temple, Kaddisiddeshwara and Jambulingeshwara temples, Jain temple and Papanatha temple are the other temples. Each temple has it's unique glory.
