This sanctuary was setup by Dr. Salim Ali, one of the most celebrated ornithologists in India. It was setup in 1940. Dr. Salim Ali discovered that the isles of this region was an important nesting ground for birds. He convinced the then rules, the Wodeyars of Mysore to declare this a wildlife sanctuary.
Prominently seen birds include Painted Storks, Common Spoonbill, Wooly-necked stork, Indian Shag, Stork-billed Kingfisher etc. Other birds include The Great Stone Plover, River Tern, Streak-throated Swallows. Birds can be observed from the shores. A good binocular will help in better birds spotting.
The boat ride of the isles are a popular attraction at Ranganthittu. The ride gives a great view of the resting birds. Apart from the birds, one can get a good view of the crocodiles, otters and bats.
