Sringeri temple is located in a picturesque landscape beside the river Tunga. The Srigeri Sharada peetha was established by Sri Jagadguru Shankaracharya. The temple showcases Vijayanagara style of architecture. It is an ancient temple of Vidyashankara. Legend says that when Sri Shankaracharya was walking along the Tunga river bank, he observed that a cobra had raised it's hood. When he observed closesly, he noticed that the cobra was giving shelter to a frog about to spawn. Impressed by the significance of the place where even natural enemies were helping another, he chose this place to share his teachings. He established the Advaitha school of philosopy here.
The temple is the chief attraction of Sringeri with Godess Sri Sharadamba, the godess of learning and wisdom as the presiding diety. The temple has guest houses for visiting pilgrims. The availability is dependent on the number of visitors. The temple also makes arrangements for prasadam(meals) everyday.
The banks of the river Tunga offers a pleasant sight. There are hoards and hoards of fish swimming nonchalantly without a worry in the world. It is a major tourist attraction for kids who enjoy feeding them.
Srigeri is well connected by road. There are buses frequently plying for Hassan, Chikkamagalur, Agumbe.
Nearest railway station is Birur. It is located in the Bangalore - Pune railroad.
Mangalore International Airport
There are frequent buses plying from Bangalore to Sringeri. Also, there are frequent buses from Chikmagalur, Hassan, Shomoga, Birur and Agumbe to Sringeri. Bangalore to Srigeri is approximately an 8 hour drive.
There are trains available to Kundapura from Bangalore. It is a major railway station on the Konkan Railway Route. Sringeri is 75 km from here. Another Railway station which is nearby is Shimoga Railway Station.
There is SBC SMET express(Train no: 16201) from Bangalore Yeshwantpur Railway station to Bhadravathi. From Bhadravathi, Srigeri is 98 kms away.
Also, Intercity Express(Train No: 12725) can be taken from Bangalore Yeshwantpur Railway station to Kadur. From Kadur, Srigeri is 120 kms away and approximately a 3 hour drive.
Connect to Tumkur road. Drive till Nelamangala and take left to the road connecting Hassan i.e follow NH 4 and NH 48 to State Highway 71 in Channapattana, Hassan. Upon reaching here take State Highway 57 and State Highway 27 to NH 13 in Sringeri Rural. This route goes enroute Belur, Chikkamagalur to reach Sringeri.
Theare are regular buses plying from Mysore to Sringeri. Journey time is around 5 to 6 hours.
Talguppa express(Train no:16206) can be taken from Mysore Junction to reach Bhadravathi. From Bhadravathi, Sringeri is 98 kms away and approximately a 2 hour drive.
Connect to Hunsur road. Take State Highway 57 and then Stage Highway 27 until Kalmetlu near Sringeri. The temple is less than a kilometer from here.
