Kovalam beach is just 12 km away from Thiruvananthapuram. It is made up of three crescent beaches. It is a well renowned beach recognised internationally. Kovalam means "grove of coconut trees". This beach gained popularity in the late seventies and early eighties with the arrival of foreigner hippies. This place has options for accomodation and food which suits all budgets.
The lighthouse beach is the largest among the three beach stretches in Kovalam. It is popular for its 35 m high Vizhinjam lighthouse. The beach is famous for sunbathing and surfing. The red and white Lighthouse stands atop the Kurumkal hillock. A small walk along the spiral staircase treats one to a great view of the surroundings.
This was popular earlier as a topless beach. This beach is especially beautiful on moonlit nights.
This is the last of the three beach stretches. It has a Ganapathy temple and Kovalam Juma Masjid. The local fisherman do their business in this part. This is one of the less frequented beaches.

Kovalam beach is 725 km away from Bengaluru. It is approximately a 12 hour drive by road through NH-7. The best way to reach Kovalam from Bengaluru is by flight. There are direct flights to Thiruvananthapuram from Bengaluru which ply everyday.
