Varkala beach popularly known as Papanasham beach. Papanasham literally means cleansing of sins committed. It is believed that a dip here cleans one of all sins. The beach is divided into two sections. The northern section is a tourist hub. The southern section is in the vicinity of the 2000 year old Sree Janardhana Swami Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
The beach is a beautiful place to spend some time. The shallow beach is ideal for swimming. Parasailing, wind surfing and scuba diving are available for water sport enthusiasts. Mineral water springs show up in the beach which is believed to have medicinal properties.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located on the southern side of the beach. It is quite popular among Hindu pilgrims.
