Hogenakal is a water fall located in South India formed by river Kaveri. It is located in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. It is 750 meters above the sea level. Locally it is referred to as Cauvery. The word Hogenakal is formed by two Kannada words "Hoge"(smoke) and "Kallu" (stone), together meaning Smoking rocks. When the water falls on the rocks, due to the force, it seems as though smoke is emanating from the rocks. At Hogenakkal, the river spreads out over a wide variety of sandy beaches. Hogenakkal is surrounded by Melagiri hills in the backdrops.
The Cauvery river is formed by numerous tributaries. At this point, Cauvery is a large river. The river cuts through the rocky terrain to create numerious water falls along the way. At places, water falls down to height of about 66 ft to create a roaring thunder.
During the dry seaons, boating is allowed. This is because water is not strong enough to pose danger to the boats. Boating is done through Coracles which can carry upto 8 people.
Oil massage at the river bed is quite popular in Hogenakkal.
